Children and their Relatives
This post is in: General Upbringing
Keeping ties between relatives is something very important in Islam. There is an increasing number of ways to communicate in today’s technological age, yet the gap between the new tech savvy generation and the older generation is growing.
In the below verse of the Qur’an, we see the community focus in Islam and the emphasis on maintaining ties with relatives:
Worship Allāh and join none with Him in worship, and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, Al-Masākin (the poor), the neighbour who is near of kin, the neighbour who is a stranger…
Qur’an 4:36
It is our duty as parents to understand the negative effects of cutting ties with relatives and ensuring we prevent our children doing such a thing as much as possible.
If we keep ties with our kinsfolk then this is evidence of imaan in Allah and the Last Day, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“…whoever believes in Allaah and the Last Day, let him maintain the bond of kinship…”
Al-Bukhaari
A good strategy to promote these beautiful Islamic values into our children is to take them with us when visiting our relatives. The more we take them to their relatives, insha Allah, the more they will feel comfortable around them. As parents, this is the least we can do.
